Cuba-United States Dialogue: Details on Recent Conversations?

The relationship between Cuba and the United States has taken a new turn, as the Cuban government announced on April 20 that delegations from both countries recently met in Havana. This announcement comes amid a climate of tension due to the energy blockade imposed by Washington on the island and speculation about possible military interventions.

Alejandro García del Toro, Deputy General Director for the U.S. at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, confirmed the meeting during an interview with the official newspaper Granma, although no details were revealed regarding the exact date or participants. According to the information, the U.S. delegation included ‘assistant secretaries from the State Department,’ while Cuba was represented by deputy foreign ministers.

The Cuban diplomat emphasized that lifting the energy blockade is a priority for his country, considering it an act of ‘economic coercion.’ Despite U.S. demands for the release of political prisoners, the Cuban government has rejected any conditions. ‘No U.S. official is going to dictate deadlines from a table in Havana,’ stated the state-run media outlet ‘Razones de Cuba.’

This context is complicated by warnings from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who urged the population to be prepared for a possible U.S. invasion, underscoring the growing tension in the region.
