The driver Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna, 32, was released after being detained for 48 hours for hitting a security guard in Trujillo. The Public Ministry opted to impose a measure of supervised release, despite the seriousness of the incident and the critical condition of the victim, Juan Martínez Torres, 54, who remains in the Intensive Care Unit at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo. The accident occurred last Sunday in the Víctor Larco district. According to investigations, Alfaro Cerna was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol content of 1.84 grams per liter, nearly four times the legal limit. Additionally, her driver’s license had expired in 2022.
Relatives of the security guard have expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the process, especially after detecting irregularities in the police report, which initially stated that the injuries were caused by a ‘fall from height.’ The head of the La Libertad Police Region, General Ricardo Espinoza Cuestas, confirmed that it was an error and has removed the implicated officers. Meanwhile, Alfaro’s partner stated that they will cover the costs of the accident and have appointed a family member to provide support to those affected. However, the niece of the security guard alleges attempts by Alfaro’s family to reach a financial settlement.
