Javier Rabanal is no longer the head coach of Universitario. The decision came after the team’s defeat against Melgar, corresponding to matchday 11 of the 2026 Apertura Tournament. This phase at the club, which began with high expectations due to his experience at Independiente del Valle, ended sooner than anticipated.
During his tenure, Rabanal managed a total of 15 matches: three friendlies and twelve official games. His record was five wins, four draws, and three losses, leaving the team in an unfavorable position. The defeats against Los Chankas, Coquimbo Unido, and Melgar were particularly critical and contributed to his departure. The first setback occurred against Los Chankas, distancing the team from the fight for the top spots. The loss to Coquimbo in the Copa Libertadores and the defeat against Melgar sealed his fate.
Universitario, which aims to remain one of the giants of Peruvian football, now faces a new challenge in the search for a replacement for Rabanal. For more details on the team’s performance, check our coverage of the current situation in the tournament.
