Itaipú Hydroelectric Plant: Records and Its Artificial Lake of 1,350 km²

The Itaipú hydroelectric plant, located on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, stands as an icon of engineering in South America. With a length of 7,919 meters, this colossal facility has generated over 3 billion megawatt-hours since its inauguration in 1984, becoming the most productive plant in the world. This infrastructure meets 75% of Paraguay’s electricity needs and 15% of Brazil’s consumption.

The Itaipú reservoir, which features an artificial lake of 1,350 km², is essential not only for electricity generation but also for regulating the flow of the Paraná River and improving navigation. Its storage capacity reaches 29 billion cubic meters, sufficient to provide drinking water to millions of people.

Despite competition from projects like the Three Gorges Dam in China, Itaipú maintains unique operational records, achieving a historic peak of 103 million MWh in 2016. The plant, which uses 12.3 million cubic meters of concrete and a mass of steel equivalent to 380 Eiffel Towers, has become a benchmark in tourism and environmental conservation.

The cooperation between Paraguay and Brazil in managing Itaipú also symbolizes lasting peace in the region, strengthening ties between both nations. As we report in this article, the development of such infrastructure is crucial for energy and economic growth in South America.
