OpenAI announced the closure of Sora, its artificial intelligence video generation platform, a decision that has surprised its users. In a message on its X profile, the Sora team thanked the community for their participation and creativity within the platform. “What you created was important, and we know this news is disappointing,” they expressed. The company, known for the development of ChatGPT, stated that it will soon provide more details about the closure timeline and the Sora API.
The shutdown also means that the agreement with Disney, which would have allowed the use of characters from franchises like Marvel and Star Wars to generate content, will not take place. A Disney spokesperson indicated that the company respects OpenAI’s decision and will continue to explore collaborations with other AI platforms. Despite the controversy generated by the agreement, especially among the U.S. writers’ union, OpenAI achieved a historic valuation of $730 billion following a funding round in February.
