Congress Approves Pension Increase for Retired Teachers of Up to S/3,500

The Congress of the Republic has approved a pension increase for retired teachers, allowing some of them to receive up to S/3,500.70. This measure, which is part of bills 3864, 4786, and 8911, was supported by 82 votes in favor, with no opposition and three abstentions. Despite having been previously observed by the Executive Branch, the regulation aims to ensure a dignified income for retired educators.

This increase will apply to teachers in the Public Teaching Career, who will receive a pension equivalent to the Monthly Gross Remuneration corresponding to the first teaching scale. It is expected that the Ministry of Economy and Finance will establish the exact amount in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

However, the General Secretary of the Unitary Union of Workers in Education of Peru (SUTEP), Lucio Castro, has raised concerns about the need to guarantee the necessary funding for its implementation. Castro emphasized that without an adequate budget, the law will have no real effects and mentioned that other provisions also lack financial support. In this regard, SUTEP is preparing to call a national assembly to demand the appropriate financing to comply with this regulation.
