Arrest of PNP Colonel Today: Implications in Gold Bar Theft

A colonel of the National Police of Peru (PNP), identified as Morón Díaz, was arrested this morning in an operation related to the criminal organization known as Los Oropesa. The capture was carried out by the police’s anti-corruption unit along with the Public Ministry. Morón Díaz, who heads the Division of Criminal Gang Investigations, is accused of being involved in the theft of a gold bar. According to investigations, it is suspected that the officer replaced the authentic gold bar with a copper replica at the Dirincri facilities. This bar was later sold for approximately $200,000. The prosecution has initiated a formal investigation against him, which could lead to new revelations about the criminal network operating in the country. This case adds to other corruption scandals that have shaken law enforcement in Peru, as detailed in this report. Authorities are expected to provide more details in the coming hours.
