Street Vendors in Gamarra Attempt to Take Over Aviación Avenue After Eviction; Nearby Roads Closed

On March 4, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and the La Victoria district conducted a cleanup operation on Aviación Avenue, an area that had been occupied by informal vendors. Despite the intervention clearing the area, some sellers attempted to return, resulting in clashes with the National Police and members of Serenazgo, according to a report from the news program Buenos Días Perú. The vendors, armed with sticks and banners, demanded relocation to spaces near the Gamarra Commercial Emporium to continue their sales.

In response to the situation, municipal authorities decided to close three blocks of the avenue to prevent further disturbances. The electric train station in the area is operating normally, although access is restricted to authorized personnel. Lima’s mayor, Renzo Reggiardo, had previously stated that the intervention on the avenue was crucial for improving pedestrian and vehicular circulation. He committed to evaluating the relocation of the vendors so they can operate in an orderly manner.
