Iquitos: Parents Protest After Classroom Collapse at Kindergarten

A group of parents and teachers from I.E.I. N° 707 “Pasitos de Jesús” in Iquitos protested on Monday outside the kindergarten following the collapse of a classroom that endangered the lives of students. The demonstration, which included chants and banners, took place on March 23rd Street in the Punchana district. Parents reported that a teacher managed to evacuate 23 four-year-old children just minutes before the wooden floor gave way over a sewage spot.

According to the protesters, the classroom’s floorboards, which were managed less than a year ago by the Regional Education Management of Loreto (GREEL), could not withstand the harsh weather conditions. Débora Ramirez, a mother of one child, expressed the parents’ determination, stating: “We are here fighting until the end.” The school’s director, Yasmina Tuesta Coral, joined the call and requested regional authorities to facilitate the necessary legal and physical sanitation for the construction of new educational infrastructure, as the current kindergarten is built over sewage, posing a serious health risk to the 120 children.

The Civil Defense has already declared the kindergarten at high risk of collapse and fire. “We want our authorities to listen to us, please,” emphasized Tuesta Coral during the protest.
