The Civil Association Transparency has called upon the National Jury of Elections (JNE) and the new administration of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) to respect the ongoing electoral process. This appeal comes in the wake of Piero Corvetto’s resignation as head of the ONPE and rumors regarding the possibility of complementary elections proposed by presidential candidate Rafael López Aliaga.
In a statement, Transparency emphasized the need to complete the vote counting from the first round, which currently positions Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez as the candidates for the second round, scheduled for June 7. “Any deviation from the course established by the electoral authority undermines the legitimacy of the process,” the organization warned.
Additionally, constitutional lawyer Luciano López highlighted that the proposal for complementary elections lacks legal basis and can only be applied in cases where there has been a previously declared electoral nullity. Meanwhile, electoral law attorney Silvia Guevara stressed that this mechanism is not contemplated for general elections, reinforcing Transparency’s stance on the importance of following the electoral schedule approved the previous year by the JNE.
