Piero Corvetto: Italian Passport Submitted to Prosecutor’s Office and Details of the Process

The former head of the ONPE, Piero Corvetto, submitted his Italian passport to the Prosecutor’s Office, as confirmed by the Attorney General, Tomás Gálvez. This action is part of the context surrounding the preliminary detention request filed by the Public Ministry due to irregularities during the electoral process.

In a recent interview, journalist Augusto Thorndike indicated that Corvetto had only submitted his Peruvian passport and that there was a risk he could leave the country. However, Gálvez clarified that both passports, the Italian and the Peruvian, are now in the possession of the Prosecutor’s Office, and that Immigration has been informed accordingly.

On April 19, just two days before his resignation, Corvetto expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigations and requested the cancellation of his vacation to clarify the deficiencies identified in the elections held on April 12. The Prosecutor’s Office summoned him on April 21 to formalize the submission of documents and advance the investigation.

On the same day, a request was filed with the judge for the preliminary detention of Corvetto and other involved officials, and the decision is now in the hands of the judge, who must resolve it promptly.
