Live Vote Recount: Who is Participating and How to Follow JNE Hearings

Starting today, April 20, 2026, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) will begin public hearings for the recount of votes from the observed ballots during the General Elections. This process, which will be conducted virtually, aims to resolve inconsistencies in presidential votes and determine which political organizations will advance to the second round on June 7. For the first time in the country’s electoral history, the JNE will implement a physical vote recount mechanism, as established by Law 32299. This change will allow Special Electoral Jurors to open envelopes containing ballots when discrepancies cannot be resolved through document verification. The sessions will include the presence of representatives, observers, and members of the Public Ministry, ensuring the transparency of the process.

To date, 15,470 observed ballots have been received, of which 30.6% correspond to the presidential election, meaning that 5,752 documents have presented errors. Citizens will be able to follow the development of these hearings in real-time through the JNE website. The first review will focus on the ballots from the Special Electoral Jury of Chanchamayo, scheduled for 9, 10, and 11 in the morning. The current situation shows a tight competition, with only 14,000 votes separating the candidates in second and third place, according to the ONPE count at 93.42%. The JNE has urged the ONPE to promptly send the pending ballots to avoid affecting the electoral schedule.
