Marisol Pérez Tello, presidential candidate for Primero la Gente, announced her intention to repeal a set of regulations she has labeled as pro-crime laws. This measure aims to strengthen the actions of the Public Ministry and the Judiciary, ensuring their autonomy. “We will govern from the law and from freedom, a law that is tough but is the law,” she stated during an event on March 25, 2026.
According to Pérez Tello, her government will commit to providing the Police with the necessary resources and conditions to investigate crimes, in collaboration with independent prosecutors and judges. She also indicated that citizens will be able to return home with peace of mind: “You will return to your home in our government and embrace your family.”
Constitutional lawyer Heber Campos considered the proposal viable, as long as new laws are introduced to prevent legal loopholes. On the other hand, criminologist Julio Corcuera warned that the repeal of these laws will not immediately solve the issue of crime, as they were established in response to the increase in extortions following the pandemic.
Marco Zevallos, a Senate candidate and part of the same group, announced that if they gain a majority in Congress, his team will raise a question of confidence to ensure the repeal of the mentioned laws. “If Congress does not repeal the laws immediately, what is established by the constitution itself will apply,” he asserted.
