During the first presidential debate, César Acuña, candidate of Alianza para el Progreso (APP), found himself embroiled in an intense controversy following accusations from his rival Fernando Olivera. The latter accused him of having links to drug trafficking and of using his university as a “laundering” operation. Acuña responded immediately, announcing that he would file a criminal defamation lawsuit against Olivera. “The offense to my honor, image, and good reputation will not go unpunished,” the politician stated on his X account, emphasizing that he has built his wealth through hard work and education.
Olivera, candidate of the Frente de la Esperanza, did not hold back in his criticisms, labeling APP as a “criminal organization.” He also alleged that Acuña extorts his students and workers to force them to attend his rallies. These accusations, it was reported, are based on a journalistic complaint involving the Universidad César Vallejo. The tense debate day, organized by the National Jury of Elections (JNE), made it clear that the electoral contest will intensify as the election date approaches, scheduled for this year.
