Óscar Arriola Refuses to Provide Crime Statistics Due to ‘Sensitivity’ of Some

Óscar Arriola, the General Commander of the National Police of Peru (PNP), announced that he will stop providing crime statistics, arguing that “someone feels bad” upon learning these figures. This comment comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in the country.

During an interview on RPP, Arriola stated: “I no longer want to pronounce another figure today. I leave it to the official figures.” However, he did not specify whom he was referring to with his statement or which official platforms can be consulted for accessing the information.

Despite his decision, the police chief assured that the PNP continues to conduct operations across the country, resulting in the capture of extortionists and murderers. “We are operating morning, noon, night, and dawn,” he affirmed.

The lack of clear statistics raises doubts among the public and the press regarding the actual state of security. As we reported in this note, insecurity has become a central topic of discussion in the current electoral campaign.
