The San Martín region is in shock following the attack on a woman who is currently in critical condition. Doris Carranza Pinillos, 45, was shot in the head by her partner, Luis Novoa Sangama, 35. The incident occurred early Saturday morning at a grill establishment in Bellavista, two hours from Tarapoto. Security cameras at the venue captured the moment Novoa shot Carranza.
After the attack, instead of seeking help, the man remained by her side while the victim lay unconscious. Neighbors, alarmed by the gunshot, alerted the authorities, who arrived quickly at the scene. Novoa was arrested by the police minutes after the shooting. According to reports, he confessed to having fired the weapon under the influence of alcohol.
The woman was initially taken to the Bellavista Hospital, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to the Regional Hospital of Tarapoto, where she remains in intensive care. Local authorities have begun the necessary investigations. This tragic incident adds to a concerning rise in gender-based violence in the region, where over 157,000 cases were handled by the Emergency Women’s Centers in 2025, as reported in this note.
