A team from the Environmental Assessment and Oversight Organization (OEFA) arrived in the district of Nieva, Amazonas, to assess the damage caused by a recent hydrocarbon spill in the Norperuano Pipeline. The crude oil leak was reported at kilometer 393+674 of Section II and, according to Petroperú, was intentionally caused by an act of sabotage. OEFA confirmed that its intervention aims to determine the extent of the environmental impact in the region. Specialists are conducting a tour of the affected area to establish the causes of the spill and the corresponding responsibilities. Additionally, they will verify whether the containment actions implemented by Petroperú complied with current regulations.
This incident occurred on Monday, March 30, when the state-owned company activated its Emergency Response Plan after detecting the leak. With the help of contractors, they managed to stop the spill and coordinated actions with local authorities. After controlling the situation, Petroperú notified the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Environmental Matters about the sabotage and the damage caused to the ecosystem. Pumping operations in Section II had been suspended since July 2024 due to low crude inventories.
