Abandoned Baby in Arequipa TODAY: Parents Under Investigation for Negligence

A couple from Arequipa is facing an investigation for alleged abandonment and negligence after leaving their 11-month-old baby alone in the street during a fight. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 29, in the Nuevo Milenio Association, in the district of Mariano Melgar, during the celebration of their older daughter’s birthday and baptism. The altercation, which involved several men and women, was captured by security cameras. Amid the chaos, the baby cried in his stroller while his mother attempted to shield an assaulted man.

After the disturbance, the child was found alone on a nearby street, where he was taken to the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital due to a severe respiratory condition. The mother, who visited the child in the hospital under police custody, claimed she believed her sister-in-law was taking care of the baby.

According to Dr. Amparo Jaen, the child is suffering from acute obstructive bronchiolitis and his prognosis is encouraging, although he will remain hospitalized for at least two days. The Special Protection Unit of the Ministry of Women is involved in the case, assessing the family situation to determine whether the child can return home or will be placed in a shelter.
