Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Shakes Arequipa Region This Morning

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook the Arequipa region this morning, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The phenomenon was recorded at 8:18 a.m. and had its epicenter in the sea, 44 kilometers south of Camaná, at a depth of 32 kilometers. Local authorities reported no material damage or casualties following the tremor. This seismic event is the second felt in the country today, following another earthquake of the same magnitude that occurred in Cajamarca earlier in the morning.

Hernando Tavera, head of the IGP, reminded the importance of building on safe soils and following technical criteria to mitigate seismic risk. “The seismic threat in Peru is real and permanent. We cannot prevent earthquakes, but we can prepare for them,” he stated. The official emphasized that Peru is located in one of the most seismically active zones in the world. “We cannot predict the exact moment of an earthquake, but we can anticipate its consequences,” he concluded.
