Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Shakes Cajamarca Region Early This Morning

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook the Cajamarca region early this morning, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The phenomenon occurred at 2:30 a.m., with the epicenter located 21 kilometers northwest of Jaén, at a depth of 22 kilometers. The IGP indicated that the tremor was felt with an intensity of II-III on the Mercalli scale in Jaén. So far, local authorities have not reported any material damage or casualties due to the earthquake.

In a recent statement, IGP chief Hernando Tavera emphasized the importance of building on safe soils and adhering to technical standards to mitigate seismic risk. “The seismic threat in Peru is real and permanent. We cannot prevent earthquakes, but we can prepare for them,” Tavera warned. He reminded that the country is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, making it necessary to strengthen the culture of prevention against possible eventualities.
