CIA Deaths in Mexico Today: What It Means for Claudia Sheinbaum and Bilateral Relations

An accident that occurred on April 19 in the Sierra of Chihuahua, where two CIA agents lost their lives, has generated new tensions between Mexico and the United States. This incident has placed President Claudia Sheinbaum in a complicated position, as she had previously denied the involvement of U.S. officials in operations within the country.

The fatal accident happened when a convoy returning from an anti-drug operation suffered a mishap, resulting in the deaths of the two agents, along with two local officers. As the news developed, the Attorney General of Chihuahua, César Jáuregui, changed his initial statement, claiming that the Americans were not involved in the operation but joined the convoy later. However, reports from ‘The Washington Post’ confirmed that the deceased were indeed CIA agents.

In light of these revelations, Sheinbaum has requested explanations from local authorities and announced the initiation of investigations to determine if federal laws were violated. The president has insisted that the operation of U.S. agents cannot be allowed without the consent of her government, a matter she considers crucial for national sovereignty.

This incident comes at a time when relations between the two countries are delicate, especially with ongoing negotiations for the USMCA. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that Sheinbaum should show more empathy towards the loss of American lives in Chihuahua.
