World’s Longest Outdoor Escalator Opens in China, Stretching 905 Meters

China has inaugurated the world’s longest outdoor escalator in Wushan County, located in the municipality of Chongqing. This impressive infrastructure spans 905 meters and overcomes a height difference of 242 meters, equivalent to a building of more than 80 stories. The construction, which took nearly two years and required an investment of approximately $100 million, aims to improve access to isolated areas and facilitate the daily transportation of residents.

Developed by the China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group, the escalator connects areas separated by steep slopes, allowing users to complete the journey in less than 20 minutes. Previously, the trip could take up to an hour via difficult paths, complicating access, especially for the elderly and people with reduced mobility.

This project not only addresses mobility issues but also adapts to the mountainous geography, providing an efficient alternative to traditional transportation systems. By integrating different urban levels, it is expected to stimulate residential and commercial demand in previously neglected sectors, thus establishing itself as an innovative model in urban development.
