Trump and the New Iranian Regime: Serious Talks and Threats over Hormuz

Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States is holding “serious conversations” with a new regime in Iran, while also issuing threats against the country’s energy facilities. In a message on his Truth Social account, the U.S. president warned that if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. military could attack power plants and oil wells on Kharg Island. Trump emphasized that “great progress” has been made in the negotiations, although he did not provide specific details.

In his message, he underscored that if an agreement is not reached soon, his administration could take drastic measures, including attacks on Iranian energy infrastructures. The president expanded his threat by mentioning that desalination plants in Iran could also be affected, in response to actions by the former regime that he claims have caused the deaths of U.S. soldiers over the past 47 years.

Furthermore, Trump postponed his ultimatum to Tehran to unblock the Strait of Hormuz until April 6, seeking to allow space for negotiations, which Iran has denied thus far. Amid this tension, the United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East, with around 50,000 troops deployed. This development comes against a backdrop of growing security concerns in the region.
