Brazil’s Supreme Court Grants House Arrest to Former President Jair Bolsonaro

The Supreme Court of Brazil decided on Tuesday to grant house arrest to former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing a 27-year sentence for coup-related charges. This measure will take effect once the ex-president is discharged from the hospital, after being moved from the intensive care unit to a regular room due to pneumonia.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes approved the defense’s request and the prosecutor’s recommendation, which argued that Bolsonaro “requires constant and careful attention.” The house arrest regime will initially last for 90 days, after which the court will evaluate the former leader’s situation to determine the execution of the remainder of his sentence.

Despite his improvement, there is still no set date for his discharge. Doctor Brasil Caiado confirmed that the former head of state is stable, although there is no forecast for hospital release. This convalescence occurs at a time when his son, Flávio Bolsonaro, is seeking to position himself as a presidential candidate for the October elections, where he is in a statistical tie with current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to polls.
