The Supreme Court of Brazil has granted former president Jair Bolsonaro ‘temporary’ house arrest on Tuesday, as he is currently hospitalized due to pneumonia. The measure, approved for a period of 90 days following his medical discharge, responds to the delicate health of the ex-president, who has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for coup-related charges.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the case, partially accepted a motion filed by Bolsonaro’s lawyers, thus supporting the prosecution’s stance that the former president ‘requires constant and careful attention.’ After his medical discharge, the conditions under which he will serve the remainder of his sentence will be reviewed.
Since late November 2022, Bolsonaro has been serving his sentence, first in a police facility and then in a penitentiary complex in Brasília. His health has been a cause for concern, as he has required hospital care on several occasions. He is currently in a private hospital where he continues treatment, including antibiotics and physiotherapy.
The situation has become more critical due to the bilateral pneumonia he is suffering from, a condition that, according to his medical team, has been exacerbated by recurrent bouts of hiccups. This hospitalization has increased pressure on Judge De Moraes, who has held meetings with the former president’s family regarding his health status.
