The Brazilian Attorney General’s Office has approved, for the first time, that former president Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison, serve his sentence under house arrest. This decision comes amid concerns for the health of the 71-year-old ex-president, who has been hospitalized since March 13 due to a severe respiratory infection.
Lawyer Paulo Gonet argued that Bolsonaro’s clinical condition justifies this change, as he requires “constant and careful attention” that his family environment can provide. The Prosecutor’s recommendation marks a significant shift in the judicial process, after his defense had unsuccessfully requested a modification of the penalty compliance regime several times.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court is responsible for deciding on the execution of the sentence and has requested the opinion of the Public Ministry before issuing a ruling. Although a decision is expected in the coming days, the magistrate has maintained a rigorous stance on Bolsonaro’s requests.
According to reports, the former president could leave the intensive care unit within the next 24 hours. Bolsonaro’s health has been a recurring topic, as his current condition is related to complications arising from an assault he suffered in 2018.
