Extortion in SJM: Young Man Fears for His Life After Reporting Cell Phone Theft

A young man reported through RPP’s Rotafono that he has received extortion threats following the theft of his cell phone in San Juan de Miraflores. The criminals are demanding that he withdraw the complaint filed, threatening to harm him and his family if he does not comply. The theft occurred on April 9, when two men on a motorcycle snatched his iPhone 12 near the María Auxiliadora Hospital. Since Monday, the victim has been receiving threatening messages that include videos in which the extortionists display a firearm. “I fear for my life and that of my family,” said the young man, who requested that authorities take his case seriously. Despite having filed the complaint at the “A” police station in San Juan de Miraflores, it has not yet been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office, and security camera footage has not been requested to advance the investigation. The situation reveals a troubling reality about citizen insecurity in Lima, where extortionists operate with impunity. The victim hopes that urgent actions will be taken to ensure his safety and that of his family.
