Waldir Ayasta Takes Office as Minister of Energy and Mines: Profile and Background

Waldir Eloy Ayasta Mechán assumed the role of the new Minister of Energy and Mines (Minem) on March 23, in a ceremony presided over by José María Balcázar. His appointment comes after the resignation of Ángelo Alfaro, who left the position following allegations of sexual abuse. Ayasta takes the helm of the ministry at a critical time, with the need to stabilize the financial situation of Petroperú. The outgoing administration had announced an injection of S/500 million for the state-owned company, funds that will be allocated for fuel purchases and short-term obligations. This comes amid a supply crisis caused by the rupture of the Camisea pipeline and rising international oil prices.

The new minister has a solid background: he is a mechanical and electrical engineer and holds a master’s degree in Business Strategy Management. Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Minister of Electricity and General Director of Rural Electrification.

Alfaro’s resignation occurred in the context of serious allegations, which he has denied, and which the Public Ministry will need to investigate. The complaint alleges that the former minister had a relationship with a minor, which has generated significant uproar in the political arena.
