Luis Llosa: “Vargas Llosa’s Taste for Creole Music May Come from His Father”

On March 31, the concert “Mario, Between Words and Music” will take place, honoring the legacy of Mario Vargas Llosa, who would have turned 90 on March 28. In this context, filmmaker Luis Llosa, director and producer of the event, shared details about the celebration, which will also mark a year since the author’s passing. “The initiative comes from Ingrid Yrivarren and Tania Libertad, who originally planned to hold a concert. In the end, it was decided that it would be a tribute to Mario, integrating elements of his life, iconic songs, and audiovisuals,” Luis Llosa explained.

Music that resonated in Vargas Llosa’s life will be performed, ranging from the Arequipeño carnivalito to the music of Édith Piaf, reflecting his Peruvian roots. The filmmaker also reflected on the influence of music in Vargas Llosa’s work, noting that it “created a working atmosphere” for the writer. Additionally, he mentioned that the taste for Creole music might have been linked to his father, with whom he had a complex relationship, but who shared a love for this musical genre.
