In a recent interview, film critic Ricardo Bedoya analyzed the current landscape of Peruvian cinema and its evolution in recent years. In his book De memorias y derivas. Sobre el cine peruano de ayer y hoy, Bedoya discusses the impact of the new film law and the situation of regional production, which has experienced remarkable growth. The year 2025 marked a milestone for Peruvian cinematography with the enactment of a new film law, although its implementation is still pending due to the lack of regulations.
Bedoya points out that, despite this new regulation, regional cinema has flourished thanks to self-management initiatives and new technologies that have reduced production costs. “There are many people making films who are not necessarily going through all the instances of the Ministry of Culture,” Bedoya stated, also highlighting that Peru’s linguistic diversity is now represented in cinema. However, he expressed concern about the potential regression of regional cinema’s expansion due to the lack of understanding by those responsible for the new law regarding the true meaning of national cinematography.
