Enrique Vila-Matas: What Metaliterature Means and Its Impact on Writing

The acclaimed Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas presents his latest work, Canon de cámara oscura, a novel that invites reflection on literature as a refuge in times of dehumanization. In this story, the protagonist, Vidal Escabia, seeks his place in a world where reality intertwines with futuristic elements, such as androids. The novel, published by Seix Barral, is a finalist for the prestigious AENA Prize for Hispanic American Narrative, which will award one million euros to the winner in April.

In a recent interview, Vila-Matas shared his views on humor in his writing, freedom and authenticity in literature, and his critique of the official literary canon, which he considers to be “in ruins.” The author also referred to metaliterature as a “critical cliché,” arguing that what is labeled as such is simply literature that reflects on itself. In his words, “anyone who writes a novel does that, whether deliberately or not.” Vila-Matas emphasizes that his work is a festive critique of his time, inviting readers to explore his literary vision.
