James Tolkan, famous for his role as ‘Mr. Strickland’ in the iconic Back to the Future trilogy, passed away on March 26 at the age of 94 in Saranac Lake, New York. The news was confirmed by a representative of the actor to People magazine, although the causes of his death have not been disclosed.
In addition to his memorable performance in Back to the Future, Tolkan had notable roles in other films from the 1980s, such as WarGames (1983) and Top Gun (1986). A member of the Back to the Future production team fondly remembered the actor, commenting that he was very kind to fans and always took the time to take photos with them. “He called them ‘Slackers’, just like his character,” they shared.
The loss of Tolkan adds to the recent death of Matt Clark, who played bartender Chester in the third installment of the saga, who passed away on March 15, 2026, at the age of 89 due to health complications. This series of deaths has saddened fans of the franchise.
