Police in Peru and Ecuador Seize Over 1.5 Tons of Marijuana Hidden in Beams

More than 1.5 tons of marijuana were seized on Tuesday, March 24, in Aguas Verdes, Tumbes, during a joint operation between the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Ecuadorian Police. The intervention, dubbed ‘Operation Trilogy’, took place at a collection point linked to a Colombian criminal organization, where the drugs were hidden in metal structures.

The operation was carried out thanks to coordinated intelligence actions between the Anti-Drug Directorate of the PNP and specialized Ecuadorian units. Agents discovered an ingenious concealment system in 32 metal beams, which contained a total of 1,957 packages of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 1,579 kilograms.

Authorities estimate that the value of the marijuana in the Peruvian illegal market amounts to approximately 3.2 million dollars. The drugs were camouflaged to evade security controls at the border. Following the seizure, the shipment was placed under the custody of the relevant authorities for analysis and verification, as part of the cooperation between Peru and Ecuador in the fight against drug trafficking.

This discovery adds to recent actions against organized crime, as we reported in this note regarding the growing security challenge in the region.
