Fuerza Popular Protests Over S/ 17 Million Cost for Certified Voter Lists

Fuerza Popular expressed its discontent this Saturday regarding the cost of over S/ 17 million that it will have to bear to obtain certified copies of the voter lists from the second round of the 2021 general elections. In a statement on social media, the party led by Keiko Fujimori questioned the conditions imposed by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) to access this information.

The ONPE announced that it will comply with a ruling from the Superior Court of Justice of Lima that orders the release of the lists, but warned that the physical documentation includes approximately two and a half million pages, each of which must be certified. According to the agency, this generates a considerable cost that must be covered by the party.

Fuerza Popular described the cost as “unacceptable” and criticized the restriction on access to information they consider essential for citizen oversight. “Transparency cannot have a price. We reject the notion that one should be forced to pay as if knowing the truth were a fine,” they stated.

Additionally, the ONPE informed that, due to the sensitive nature of the data contained in this information, protective measures will be implemented before its delivery, which has generated further criticism from the political group. According to the ONPE, the lists contain personal data that, if made public without protection, would violate the Personal Data Protection Law.

This statement comes in the context of Fuerza Popular’s allegations of supposed electoral fraud in the 2021 elections, claims that have not been substantiated in judicial instances.
