Rejected Congress Members: Who Promoted Reelection and Won’t Return

The general elections on April 12, 2026, marked a turning point for several congress members who promoted reelection but failed to maintain their positions. The #PorEstosNo campaign, led by lawyer Rosa María Palacios, had a significant impact by motivating voters to punish parties such as Alianza Para el Progreso, Podemos Perú, Somos Perú, and Avanza País. Of the 93 congress members who supported the reform for the return to bicameralism, 64 ran in these elections, but many of them, including figures like Ernesto Bustamante and Tania Ramírez, received fewer than 1,000 votes.

Palacios highlighted that 70% of the current congress members did not achieve reelection, reflecting widespread discontent with legislative management. The rejection of these candidates was evident at the polls, where the Fuerza Popular party, despite its influence, received just over 2 million votes from an electorate of 27 million. This result is seen as a clear example of the punitive vote that occurred in response to the lack of renewal and the controversial actions of many of these representatives. As we reported earlier, the influence of the #PorEstosNo campaign was crucial in changing the political landscape, making it clear that citizens are willing to evaluate the performance of their representatives.
