In a recent interview with La República, former minister Walter Albán analyzed the results of the first electoral round and the upcoming political landscape. Albán emphasized that support for Roberto Sánchez reflects a reclamation of the vote for Pedro Castillo in 2021, noting that Fujimorism has managed to disperse the vote to qualify for the second round with a minimal percentage.
The former Ombudsman expressed his concern over the institutional crisis the country is facing, stating that the rule of law in Peru has ceased to function. “Institutions have been captured and obey a mafia pact,” he stressed, referring to the manipulation of the Constitutional Tribunal and other entities.
Albán also criticized the narrative of electoral fraud, pointing out that observation missions, such as those from the OAS and the European Union, have confirmed that there is no evidence to support such accusations. “The right has failed to accept a defeat,” he asserted, echoing the frustration of many voters who feel their choice for Castillo was stripped away.
Finally, the former minister suggested that the electoral outcome, while not optimal, could be the beginning of a process to recover institutional integrity, provided that the will of the electorate is respected, as discussed in other recent political interventions.
