2026 Elections: The Role and Functions of Poll Representatives

Poll representatives are key figures in the Peruvian electoral process, acting as representatives of political parties at each polling station. Their duties begin from the setup to the vote counting, where they have the authority to sign records, review ballots, and file complaints. According to the National Jury of Elections (JNE), as of April 9, 2026, 370 poll representatives and 1,938 voting center representatives have been registered nationwide. Julia Romero, spokesperson for the JNE, emphasized the importance of these representatives in ensuring transparency in elections. “A poll representative is a person designated to represent the interests of their organization before the electoral system,” she commented. However, experts like José Tello have expressed concern about the low coverage of representatives at polling stations, considering that approximately 92,000 polling stations will be set up in total. Poll representatives can observe all electoral acts, sign records, and make observations, but they also have clear limits. They cannot interrogate voters, engage in conversations during voting, or interrupt the counting process. If they violate these rules, polling station members can revoke their access.
