2026 Elections: Fines for Voters and Poll Workers, What Are They and in What Cases?

On April 12, citizens of Peru will face the responsibility of voting and, in some cases, serving as poll workers during the 2026 General Elections. Those who fail to fulfill these obligations may face financial penalties. According to the National Jury of Elections (JNE), the amount of the fine for not voting varies according to the poverty classification of the district of residence. For districts classified as non-poor, the fine amounts to S/110; in poor districts, it is S/55; and in areas of extreme poverty, it is S/27.50. In the case of poll workers, the fine for failing to appear on voting day is S/275, equivalent to 5% of the Tax Unit (UIT). This applies to both primary and alternate members who do not show up at the time of the installation of the polling station. Additionally, those who refuse to fulfill the role of poll worker will also face the same fine. If a voter fails to appear to vote and also does not fulfill their role as a poll worker, they could receive two fines, as clarified by Luis Grillo, head of Citizen Services at the JNE.
