With just a few days left until the General Elections in Peru 2026, notable aspects have emerged in the political contest. A total of 19 out of 35 presidential candidates are also running for the National Senate, aiming to secure a seat in Congress in addition to the presidency. Among the candidates is Alfonso López Chau (Ahora Nación), who is seeking the number 1 position on the Senate list. Another prominent figure is Rafael López Aliaga (Renovación Popular), who is also running for the Senate following his tenure as mayor of Lima. The group includes experienced parliamentary figures such as César Acuña (Alianza para el Progreso) and José Williams (Avanza País), who are also leading their respective lists. This situation reflects a significant interest in dual candidacies, as over 70% of the candidates are seeking not only the presidency but also a place in Congress. Additionally, six other candidates have aspirations for the Chamber of Deputies. This phenomenon raises questions about the future of Congress and the presidency, as explained by Professor Fernando Tuesta from PUCP, since if elected to both positions, the candidate must choose one office.
