Prohibition of Alcohol in Peru: When Does It Start and What Are the Restrictions for the 2026 Elections?

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) has established restrictions that will come into effect starting Monday, April 5, as part of the measures for the General Elections 2026, scheduled for Sunday, April 12. Among these restrictions is the alcohol prohibition, which will begin on Saturday, April 11 at 8:00 a.m. and end at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13. During this period, the sale of alcoholic beverages and the opening of establishments for their sale will be prohibited, in accordance with Article 351 of the Organic Law of Elections (LOE). The penalties for non-compliance may include fines of up to 100 UIT and prison sentences of up to six months.

Additionally, starting at 00:00 hours on Monday, April 6, the dissemination of voting intention polls in the media will be prohibited. Violating this rule may also result in significant fines, ranging from S/55,000 to S/550,000. Furthermore, from Friday, April 10, political meetings will be restricted and electoral propaganda will be suspended. On the day of the elections, the gathering of voters within 100 meters of polling places is prohibited. To ensure compliance with these regulations, the JNE will conduct oversight operations throughout the country.
