ONPE 2026 Elections: Over 1,900 Polling Stations to Reduce Absenteeism

With just nine days to go until the general elections on April 12, the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Piero Corvetto, inspected various venues in Metropolitan Lima to ensure everything is ready for the electoral process. During his tour, he visited the Decentralized Offices of Electoral Processes (ODPE) in San Isidro, Chorrillos, and Miraflores, where he oversaw the necessary logistical and technical actions. Corvetto emphasized the importance of training polling station members and reviewed preparations for a simulation of the electoral computing system scheduled for this Sunday, April 5. In this context, previous visits were also conducted in Rímac and the Cercado de Lima.

Increase in Polling Stations

In an effort to combat “structural absenteeism,” ONPE has increased the number of polling stations in populated areas from 700 to 1,917 nationwide. Corvetto stated that many Peruvians find it more costly to go vote than not to do so, which is why this effort aims to facilitate voting in native communities. Finally, he called on voters and polling station members to utilize digital tools such as the ONPEduca platform to effectively perform their roles during the elections.
