Illegal Mining in Madre de Dios: Losses Exceeding S/ 10 Million Due to Military Operations

The illegal mining in Madre de Dios has faced a severe setback, with losses exceeding S/ 10 million following a military operation in the La Cantonera area, located in the Inambari district. This region, which is grappling with serious deforestation issues, has become a focal point of concern due to the irreversible impacts that mining has on ecosystems and communities, including isolated indigenous peoples.

The Southern Operational Command, in collaboration with the National Police of Peru and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Environmental Matters, conducted an operation that resulted in the destruction of 27 illegal miners’ camps and the seizure of multiple equipment, including 29 motor pumps and 18 chutes. According to the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, General Cesar Briceño, these actions are part of an effort to regain territorial control in the region.

Despite these interventions, illegal mining remains one of the main threats in Madre de Dios, generating not only deforestation but also links to drug trafficking and other illicit activities. The situation in Inambari, a crucial area for ecotourism, is particularly alarming, as mineral extraction leads to forced displacements and affects the health of local communities, especially the most vulnerable.
