The provisional Supreme Judge Edhin Campos Barranzuela has extended the preparatory investigation period against former president Pedro Castillo and former ministers Juan Silva and Geiner Alvarado by 20 months. This decision pertains to cases related to Petroperú, the Tarata Bridge, and the Ministry of Housing. The measure was adopted after partially considering the request from the Second Supreme Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Crimes Committed by Public Officials, which had sought a 24-month extension.
The magistrate indicated that a possible criminal organization involving around 98 individuals is under investigation, justifying the need for additional time to carry out the necessary proceedings. The initial 36-month period, which began on February 24, 2023, is set to expire on February 23, 2026. During this time, the Prosecutor’s Office aims to process information and gather witness statements, as well as request documentation from various entities, some of which have provided incomplete information.
Recently, the Judiciary also extended Castillo’s preventive detention by 12 months and Alvarado’s by 7 months. In Silva’s case, there is a national and international arrest warrant. This situation occurs within a complex judicial context that has led to previous convictions, including one against Castillo for his attempted coup in December 2022.
