Law Declaring the Creation of a Spaceport in the Country as National Interest Enacted

On March 27, 2026, the Peruvian government officially enacted a law declaring the creation of a spaceport in the country as a matter of national interest. This regulation was published in the official newspaper El Peruano and signed by President José Balcázar and the President of the Council of Ministers, Luis Arroyo. The law aims to position Peru as a regional leader in the space sector, allowing the Ministry of Defense to coordinate the necessary actions for its implementation.

According to the text of the law, the development of this project is considered a “public necessity.” The approval of the bill was achieved with 78 votes in favor, 3 against, and 3 abstentions, after having been previously supported in the first voting. The initiative was presented to Congress on October 1 of the previous year by then-President Dina Boluarte.

The government argues that strengthening space capabilities is key to national security and the technological development of the country. As stated, this project would facilitate Peru’s participation in the global market for space services and generate employment and foreign investment.

The creation of the spaceport is also part of the National Multisectoral Policy on National Security and Defense 2030, which recognizes the importance of technological capabilities in facing various threats. For more details on the political context, you can read about judicial independence in Peru.
