Colombia is making progress in the modernization of the San Luis Airport in Ipiales, located at an altitude of 2,976 meters above sea level, with an investment exceeding 145 billion pesos, equivalent to more than 40 million dollars. This project, set to be completed in the first half of 2027, aims to transform the airfield into a key point of international connectivity in the southern region of the country.
The Minister of Transport, María Fernanda Rojas Mantilla, emphasized that this renovation is a commitment to the economic and social development of the south. Among the improvements, a new 3,600 square meter passenger terminal and a 40-meter control tower are included, crucial for safety in this mountainous area. The expansion of the platform will allow for the simultaneous parking of up to three Airbus A320 aircraft, while maintenance on the runway is currently 69% complete.
This infrastructure will not only benefit tourism but will also boost cross-border trade and generate new jobs in the area. With this project, it is expected to strengthen Colombia’s connectivity with Ecuador, facilitating trade exchange and improving air emergency services, which represents a significant advancement for the region, as mentioned in a recent news article.
