Russia and Egypt Call for Immediate Cessation of War in Iran: Key Points from the Meeting in Moscow

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelaty called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East. During a press conference, Lavrov emphasized the need to return to a political and diplomatic process to resolve the differences in the region, ensuring the security of all involved states. Lavrov described the war in Iran as ‘the most serious crisis at the moment’ and criticized the ‘unprovoked aggression’ of the United States and Israel towards the Islamic Republic. He also mentioned that the current war is overshadowing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which remains relevant.

The Russian minister highlighted the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, established in October 2025 through Egyptian mediation. For his part, Abdelaty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis and stressed the need to strengthen tourism and air traffic between the two countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin also met with Abdelaty and expressed his hope for the war in Iran to end soon. Additionally, he invited the Egyptian minister to participate in the upcoming Russia-Africa summit scheduled for October.
