School Shooting in Argentina: What We Know About the Attack That Left One Dead and Eight Injured

The town of San Cristóbal, in Santa Fe, Argentina, is experiencing profound shock following a school shooting that resulted in the death of a minor and eight injuries. The attack occurred around 7:15 a.m. during the flag-raising ceremony at the Mariano Moreno Normal School. A 15-year-old student, who hid a shotgun in a guitar case, fired between four and five shots, claiming the life of Ian Cabrera Núñez, 13, and injuring two other young people. The injured, aged 13 and 15, are out of danger, although one sustained severe injuries. Six more students suffered minor injuries while trying to escape the scene. The school janitor, Fabio Barreto, intervened and managed to disarm the attacker before the police arrived, preventing a greater tragedy.

The motives behind the attack are still under discussion. Some rumors suggest that the teenager may have been a victim of bullying, although the Minister of Education of Santa Fe, José Goity, stated that there are no records of issues in his educational history. The minor’s lawyer mentioned that the boy had faced family problems and was undergoing psychological treatment. The Government of Santa Fe has declared two days of mourning and suspended classes at all levels while authorities continue to investigate the case. According to the Minister of Justice, the shooter, being a minor, will not face criminal punishment under current laws.
