José María “Chema” Salcedo, an emblematic name in Peruvian journalism, has left an indelible mark thanks to his versatility. Born on September 12, 1946, in Bilbao, Spain, his life took a turn when his family emigrated to Peru in 1951. Throughout his career, he has been a journalist, writer, screenwriter, director, actor, and educator, as well as a fervent supporter of Athletic Club de Bilbao.
Salcedo began his journalism career in 1974 when Raúl Vargas invited him to join the newspaper La Prensa. His talent for writing led him to stand out in various publications, including a notable investigation at the Hospital Víctor Larco Herrera. During his time at RPP, he became the voice that accompanied Peruvians during critical moments, such as the disastrous El Niño phenomenon in 1997, where an emotional call from a woman in Trujillo became emblematic.
In 2018, he faced a cancer diagnosis, but after a successful recovery, he returned to RPP with his characteristic humor. His legacy goes beyond journalism; he wrote the script for ‘Alias la gringa’ and ran for mayor of Miraflores. Salcedo is remembered not only for his work but as a man of multiple talents who touched the lives of those who knew him, leaving an inspiring legacy.
