Entel has taken a significant step in the telecommunications sector in Peru by testing the sending of WhatsApp messages via the Starlink satellite, owned by Elon Musk. This test was conducted on April 20 in Cieneguilla, an area without mobile coverage, marking a significant advancement in direct connectivity to mobile phones.
The Chilean company announced that it will invest US$221 million in Peru during 2026, aiming to increase its market share in the mobile sector to 30% in the coming years. This investment will primarily focus on expanding its mobile network and improving fiber optic services.
The new “D2C” (direct-to-cell) technology will allow users to access applications such as WhatsApp and Google Maps, even in remote areas. According to Nino Boggio, Legal Manager at Entel, this solution is crucial for addressing the geographical challenges of the country, where isolated areas still exist with low population density.
With this advancement, Peru and Chile are positioned as pioneers in Latin America in the implementation of this type of connectivity. As we reported in this note, growth in the telecommunications sector is notable, with a total investment of over S/4,500 million in 2025.
