Military Service in Barracks: How to Access the 50% Increase in Economic Allowance

The Government of Peru has decided to increase the monthly economic allowance for young individuals performing military service in barracks by 50%. This measure aims to make this service more attractive and recognize the importance of their role in national defense. The Budget Commission of Congress approved the bill authorizing this increase, which will benefit over 45,000 young recruits.

Defense Minister Carlos Díaz Dañino stated that this decision also aims to improve service conditions and contribute to the personal development of the recruits. Since 2012, the economic allowance had not been adjusted, affecting the ability of servicemen to meet their basic needs. This adjustment will be implemented starting June 2026 through a supreme decree, which will also allow for a relaxation of budgetary restrictions to facilitate the increase.

The funding will come from the budget of the Ministry of Defense, capped at S/ 20 million during the fiscal year 2026. This measure is a significant step towards strengthening the working conditions of young individuals in military service, as mentioned in the analysis of the current situation in the sector.
